A RELIEF FOR NANYUKI TRADERS AFTER THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF NANYUKI OPEN AIR MARKET
HE Governor Ndiritu Murithi, Deputy Governor John Mwaniki, Thingithu MCA Stephen Ndiritu and CEC Trade BiwotT Tirop on Tuesday October 16, 2018 officially opened Nanyuki Open air market formerly known as Nanyuki Old Market.
The market has a capacity of approximately 2,340 traders distributed as follows:
a) Open air 1,850
b) Sheds 240 traders
c) Enclosed structures along the perimeter 250 traders
All traders operating from the road side leading to the market, along the prison road, from Nyakio, within the perimeter of new market, Soko Mjinga, Kenol and traders along Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital will be accommodated into the market. This will be a true transformation in Nanyuki town since all activities of agricultural produce will be carried out in the new constructed market.
This process will result to less congestion on our streets, discipline in our towns, organized markets and more clients will grace the new market for produce since no other place will be in a position to offer similar services. All traders have been engaged through their leadership and are supporting government efforts of bulking all traders under one roof.
From estimates; the market will provide 500 more direct opportunities and over 2,500 indirect opportunities besides more revenue to the existing traders. The county will also benefit from more revenues due to increased trading activities.
Once all the street vendors have been relocated and accommodated in the New Nanyuki Open Air Market, the following key outcomes are expected:
1. Good Trading Environment
Traders are expected to enjoy a fairly good trading environment considering that a number of improvements have been instituted within the market including construction of 3 sheds, cabro paving and murraming of open spaces, drainage works and improved sanitation after construction of a new toilet and renovation of the existing one. The market is currently being served by four toilets which we believe is sufficient
Besides, the traders will enjoy a relatively secure environment following the mounting of lockable gates and improved lighting system. Further, the stalls have been spaced to form a perimeter wall across the entire market, equally enhancing the security of the market. The traders are likely to operate for 24 hours at their preference.
2. Job and Wealth Creation
With an expanded market, more jobs will be created, which in return, will lead to more wealth creation for the market users. The direct jobs created from the operationalization of the market are estimated at 2,500, while indirect jobs are estimated at 5,000.
3. Revenue
The revenue expected from the operational Nanyuki Open Air Market is estimated at Ksh 8 million annually.

Works done in the Market Cost (Ksh)
- Gravelling works 2M
- Lighting 0.5M
- Entry and exit gates and pedestrian gates 1M
- Drainage works 0.5M
Total 4M
The Department intends to undertake further improvement on the market by constructing a new extra market shed to accommodate more traders, selling racks under the sheds and storied stalls along the perimeter spaces to cater for the small-scale industrialists such as tailors, shoemakers, food processors etc. the sheds will also be provided with the lighting to enable traders operate for long hours.
The Department will also consider, based on the existing budget allocations, installing inbuilt cold-rooms for the fresh produce and digital weighing scales for bulk buying in the market in the future.
It is the intention of the County Government of Laikipia through the Department of Trade and other relevant line ministries that the business environment be continuously improved. The measures outlined above are considered as fairly sufficient to allow for all the traders within the streets to resettle comfortably in the market place.
The department shall continue working with stakeholders in the business sector and seek ways of enhancing their working environment and ease of doing business.
