Latest Data Shows Laikipia's Economy Growing At Nine Percent

Laikipia County economy has registered a steady improvement in all the leading sectors for the five years since 2013, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Data obtained from the Laikipia County Statistical Abstract 2019 indicate a steady growth with an estimate of Ksh. 81 billion in 2017, up from Ksh. 38.2 billion in 2013 on Gross County Products (CGP), a county equivalent of GDP. This translates to 1.1 percent contribution to the county GDP in 2017, as compared to 0.9 per cent share in 2013.
According to the figures in the statistical abstract, agriculture remains the main contributor to the Laikipia Gross County Product with an estimated input of Ksh. 35 billion, a 44 per cent of the total CDP share. Whole sale and retail business come in second at Ksh. 7.132 million in 2017, up from Ksh. 4.3 billion in 2013.
Financial and Insurance activities and Transport and Storage come in second and fourth place with an estimated GCP of Ksh. 6.275 billion and Ksh 5.904 billion respectively in 2017, up from Ksh. 31.17 billion and Ksh. 3.17 billion respectively in 2013.
Speaking during the launch of Laikipia County Statistical Abstract, Governor Ndiritu Muriithi has underscored the significance of the data obtained in helping county departments set measurable annual targets to achieve set goals. Mr. Muriithi further added that the statistics will be used in support of the ongoing public support modernization by enabling staff to get relevant performance indicators.
The county boss further expressed optimism with the use of the data by potential investors to identify and evaluate potential investment opportunities, adding that the national government and development partners will use the data to assessing projects and tracking impacts of innovations.
KNBS statistics show that a majority of the economic activities in the county have posted an upward trajectory while few have shown average growth. Mining and quarrying, electricity supply and construction have posted significant growth rate. Others on the upward trend are ICT and Public Administration and Defense.
Farms under irrigation have also increased exponentially rise too. Total land coverage under irrigation has increased from 258 hectares in 2016 to 2018.
Mr. Muriithi further said his government seeks to leverage on key areas of significant economic potential identified by the KNBS data to allocate resources. The Gross County Product and the statistical abstract, the county boss said, will provide governments and non-government organizations with a deeper understanding of the Laikipia economy and the social economic progress of the people.
Mr. Muriithi further added that his government is keen to utilize the verifiable evidence from the statistical abstract to make decisions on sectors to focus that the evidence indicate the county can produce competitively.
