Laikipia County is fast tracking a livestock traceability initiative that is meant to record ownership and medical history of cattle within its borders.
The move comes in the wake of concerns on the substandard meat in the market. It will also minimize stock thefts.
The initiative is also meant to present quality Laikipia beef to local and international markets with a guarantee of medical history of animals. Laikipia beef is missing out on the international markets which are specific on beef history.
The livestock tagging is also set to rope in livestock farmers onto banking and insurance platforms where livestock will be used as collateral for farmers to access loans.
The World Vision-led initiative has seen the tagging of 40,000 animals across Laikipia County. The pilot project covers Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo and Marsabit Counties, with Laikipia leading on project coverage.
The project brings on board partners such as KCB Foundation, private ranches and livestock farmers across Laikipia.
