Laikipia County has chalked the single biggest transaction yet involving the leasing of road construction equipment.
The Shs180 million deal with motor vehicle leasing firm, RentCo is the single biggest project undertaken by the Governor Ndiritu Muriithis administration followed by Solio Water Project which is worth Sh140 million.
Coming after intensive year-long evaluation, the equipment leasing deal is a big vote of confidence by the market, more so the banking sector, on the county governments financial management and a demonstration of credit worthiness.
Laikipia is the first county to lease construction and transport equipment through a county guarantee platform and others could follow.
But it has not come as a surprise for Laikipia. The devolved unit has made a lot of efforts in governance and transparency. It has developed a culture of announcing its financial results on quarterly basis. In the last financial year its own source revenue grew by 35 percent and surpassed the target of Sh800 million.
The growth in revenue has been attributed to key reforms in the public service and embracing of technology to improve efficiency and reduce wastage.
With more road construction equipment, Laikipia citizens can expect better roads, improved commerce, and easier connectivity, movement of people, goods and services and generally improvement in the quality of life within the county.
