Good Times Ahead For The Health Sector In Laikipia

  0
Laikipia county government embarked on a county wide NHIF drive last year as a way to achieve universal health coverage. This led to a dramatic rise from 34 % to now 62% of households in Laikipia under the coverage of NHIF.
This has had a large impact on our health facilities with 43000 members selecting Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital as their primary health facility to seek outpatient services. This has in turn changed how we provide services as patients who have no financial barriers to access health services, visit the hospital more frequently. In the last quarter there were 48000 visits in Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, 19000 new visits and 28000 were revisits. The data for the revisiting patients indicate they all have NHIF cards, so with medical insurance, people tend to improve their health seeking behavior. NHIF coverage has also beefed up preventive health services.
Through the use of community health volunteers in registration into NHIF, members of the public are also educated on how to prevent ailments that are easily preventable.
A cluster of 10 Community Health Volunteers are under the supervision of a health profession who is a health assistant based in that community and is linked to a health facility. The Community Health Volunteer therefore gets the right messages to communicate based on the disease pattern of where the community health worker is based. They also ensure expectant mothers attend their Ante-natal clinics at least four times. This ensures reduction in infant mortality hence we are ranked as the 2nd county with the lowest mortality rate.
With such a clear set plan for our health facilities, we are assured of improved services for our people and we are committed to deliver on the promise that we made of ensuring access to quality and affordable health care to our people.
