Laikipia County is set to benefit from a 40MW solar power project in Rumuruti, as the county sets the pace towards the exploitation and use of renewable energy.
The county government has entered a memorandum of understanding with the investors of Rumuruti Solar Project to develop the solar farm on a 300 acre piece of land.
The Kshs6 billion Rumuruti Solar Project is set to create 100 jobs during the construction, and retain 20 people at its operational stage. Investors on this mega project settled on Laikipia due to its proximity to the equator, giving it a long duration of intense sunlight to harness.
The mega project adds to the list of other private investors seeking to set up shop in Laikipia, confirming its growing attraction to investors. The latest report by KIPRA puts Laikipia at position five out of the 47 counties on the ease of doing business.
The project is expected to further relieve the country of the burden of depending on the diesel generated electricity, as investors have continued to shy away from the unreliable source of power. Consumers have continued to bear the brunt of unstable electricity prices owing to the fluctuating oil prices in the international market.
The project sponsors entered into a 20 year power purchase agreement with Kenya Power. The project sponsors are an experienced consortium comprising of Scatec Solar ASA, Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries (Norfund), and Kenergy Renewables.
