Nanyuki, May 4, 2020.Following the Governor's call for well-wishers to chip in and help the most vulnerable in Laikipia, organizations and individuals have responded positively.
In response to the call, Unison Sacco presented Kshs. 1.2 million cheque to go towards the Laikipia County Covid-19 Emergency Fund.
Zeitz Foundation and Segera Limited also donated Kshs 200,000 each towards the cause.
While presenting the Unison Sacco cheque, the Sacco's top officials led by their chairman James Muhandi, applauded the county administration for setting up the emergency fund to help the needy and those who have lost their jobs in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.
"This idea of asking for help in order to help the needy in our community will ensure that no one will go hungry as we continue with the efforts to contain coronavirus, said Mr. Muhandi.
Mr Sohan Aggarwal presented the donations from Zeitz Foundation and Segera Limited cheques. Governor Ndiritu Muriithi thanked the donors for responding to the emergency plea but regretted that citizens were reluctant to change their behavior by maintaining social distance, wearing face masks correctly and washing hands to keep virus away.
"Laikipians and Kenyans in general have greatly relaxed in the fight against the pandemic which is a dangerous move. No wonder we have seen more confirmed cases recently than there were early last week and previous weeks," he said.
On his part, Water CEC Njenga Kahiro who is also tasked with ensuring the smooth running of Lisha Jamii program which ensures zero contact in food distribution, hailed all those who have been donating to the kitty.
We thank all those who have joined our efforts in ensuring we feed our community, he said
So far 117 individuals and organizations have donated a total amount of Ksh 4.6m and 218 others have donated in kind goods worth Ksh 5.6m. The total amount of donations from well-wishers is now past Ksh 11 million. It is a good progress but still there are many more households to be fed.
The program has been carried out in villages of Kanyoni, Shika Adabu and Maina. Over 1,000 families have benefitted. Some of the immediate areas to benefit this week with the food distribution include Rumuruti, Manguo, Kathiru, Likiii, Mkogondo East and West and Sosian.
