H.E. Governor Ndiritu Muriithi on Friday 30th October 2020 issued out the first two Laikipia group ranches title deeds to the Maasai communities from Il Ngwesi and Musul in an event attended by scores.
This is historic as it is the first time in the country that community land titles have been issued out. Laikipia is the first county of eight counties to issue out group land titles.
Il Ngwesi and Musul are the first two of the thirteen groups in the county to benefit from issuance of these titles. The rest of the groups are set to be issued similar documents before the end of the year.
The Governor noted that the issuance of these titles was an example of what needs to be done in the country in terms of land identity.
The communities will benefit a great deal as they will now be able to plan ahead in terms of conservation of land. Land titles will also minimize disputes as the communities identify to the ownership of the land. Communities will also be assured of food security through equitable and secure access and management of land.
The Governor also reminded the communities to adopt feedlot system. He insisted that feedlot system will help in increased productivity of livestock. He also stated that the County Government will help in the improvement of feedlot systems through pasture generation. The issuing of these titles was a combined effort from various governmental and non-governmental agencies such as FAO, EU, Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, and National Land Commission (NLC).
