Today, we held the first ever Contract Farming Round table hosted by the County Government of Laikipia, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & industry's Nanyuki Chapter and East Africa Maltings Ltd, a subsidiary of East Africa Breweries Ltd.
I committed to support up to 6,000 farmers to sign sorghum production contracts grow in the next 30days. The expected yield has an estimated market value of over 300m shillings. Farmers will access KES120 Million credit line by the Laikipia County Enterprise Fund, Sacco revolving funds, Banks and Saccos. KCB and Equity bank pledged to partner with the County Government to provide extension services to farmers.
Further, Agventure committed to start an outgrower scheme for Canola production while Twiga Foods targets to commence buying potatoes in October. Livestock farmers asked my Government to provide security against invaders in order to secure pasture and fodder to save livestock during the dry season early 2018.
I committed to set up a special desk to manage contract farming to make the process hassle free. Laikipia County Government targets to facilitate signing of farming contracts worth over KES1bn in the current financial year.
The event was attended by 160 participants drawn from close to 80 farmers’ organizations, Co-operatives, wholesale markets, Corporates and County Government staff.
