NLC Hands Over 741 Allotment Letters For Likii Settlement Scheme To HE. Governor Joshua Irungu EGH
Updated on: Aug 15, 2024
Residents of the Likii informal settlement in Nanyuki town are on the verge of finally acquiring title deeds for their land after the National Land Commission (NLC) handed over 741 allotment letters to Governor Joshua Irungu, EGH.
The issuance was overseen by NLC Commissioners Reginald Okumu and Hubbie Hussein, along with NLC Chief Executive Officer Kabale Tache, on August 15, 2024.
This milestone is a key part of Governor Irungu's commitment to resolving land ownership issues in major Laikipia towns, including Nanyuki, Nyahururu, and Rumuruti.
Governor Irungu has previously emphasized the importance of secure land tenure, noting, "Lack of land ownership security is extremely frustrating for landowners, especially when they wish to invest or settle permanently. My administration is determined to eliminate this barrier to investment for our people."
During the allotment handover in Nairobi, Governor Irungu highlighted that the letters would not only benefit individual plot owners but also significantly boost Nanyuki town's economic development by providing security of ownership.
NLC Chairman Gershom Otachi underscored the importance of the regularization process in ensuring all Kenyans have access to secure land tenure. He commended the collaboration between the NLC and the Laikipia County Government as a strong example of both institutions' commitment to resolving land disputes and promoting sustainable urban development.
A comprehensive land regularization process, involving the identification and verification of beneficiaries as well as the mapping and documentation of plots, is actively underway across all informal settlements in Laikipia County in preparation for the issuance of title deeds.
Governor Irungu was accompanied by Mr. Martin Ekwam, the CECM in charge of Infrastructure, Lands, Public Works, and Urban Development.
