Readying County Environment Committee: Fight Against Climate Change
Updated on: Sep 23, 2024
Laikipia County has stepped up the fight against Climate Change in the effort of reversing the adverse effects of global warming that are severely weighing down food security interventions due to unpredictable rain seasons, prolonged droughts, and health implications occasioned by nutritional issues brought about by threat on food availability.
To properly fight back against climate change, environment conservation and forest restoration becomes the starting point, community sensitization becoming key strategy. County Environment Committees becomes the ideal team to lead the efforts.
On September 13, 2024, H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH opened an intensive training exercise for County Environment Committees in Nanyuki. The training was in partnership with UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT), The Centre for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF).
Once trained, the committees will be required to pass-on the knowledge to mwananchi while also being part of environment interventions for environmental restoration and boosting food productivity - to improve our food security and ensure compliance with environmental regulations aligned to both levels of government.
Already, County Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change has established Nanyuki Rural Resource Centre, field school for educating the community on best tree-growing practices, focusing on leveraging our forests, trees and agroforestry.
