Establishing KIRIMON GAME RESERVE: International Fund For Animal Welfare (IFAW) Meeting
Updated on: Oct 03, 2024
Laikipia County continues to engage environment and conservation technical partners in its effort of establishing the Kirimon Game Reserve, in Sosian Ward.
Towards these efforts, on October 3, 2024, H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH held a consultative meeting with International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) team.
The meeting's agenda was restoration of Kirimon Game Reserve ecosystem and exploring the best human and wildlife interdependency approaches while setting up the game reserve.
The team was led by IFAW president and CEO Mr.Azzedine Downes and the African Director, Mr. James Isiche.
This collaboration is also key to developing a well-managed game reserve that focuses on conservation where community owns up responsibility of their natural heritage: wildlife, culture, conservation and rangeland restoration.
It is through this support that the County Government of Laikipia has made significant progress in holding community meetings to help with the smooth resettlement of local residents.
Over 1,500 families have been squatting on a section of the Game Reserve, which sits on 43,000 acres of land, for over three decades.
