New TB Isolation Ward At Nyahururu Government Prison
Updated on: Oct 09, 2024
Laikipia County Department of Health and Public Services has constructed a Tuberculosis (TB) isolation block in Nyahururu GK Prison to decongest NCRH - Nyahururu County Referral Hospital -General.
The facility was officially opened on October 9, 2024 by H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH, alongside Principal Secretary of Correctional Service, Salome Wairimu Muhia.
In set-up such prison where there is a large number of people in an enclosed space, and TB being a highly infectious disease, the threat of infection becomes prevalent and a huge risk to inmates and prison staff.
This reality informed the construction of this isolation ward at Nyahururu correction facility, a mandate the county is charged with in providing health services to public facilities and supervising health service delivery within the ward.
According to Mr David Muriithi well known as 'Muriithi wa TB,' the county TB and Leprosy coordinator (CTLC), the new facility will aid in the fight against TB in the correction facility. He says, prisons experience late diagnosis, inadequate treatment, overcrowding, poor ventilation and repeated prison transfer that catalyse transmission of TB infection thereby complicating control and prevention of the disease.
The isolation wards will complement the three-run government dispensaries inside the three correctional facilities in Rumuruti, Nanyuki and in Nyahururu.
