Revival of railway to spur regional economic growth
Laikipia County is set to reap big with the planned revival of the railway line between Nairobi and and the ten counties under the Central Region Economic Bloc.
The Kenya Railway Corporation is fastracking the rehabilitation of the 240km railway line to link Nairobi and Nanyuki. Representatives from Kenya Railways at a conference in Nanyuki revealed that there are materials ready for the rehabilitation of the Nairobi Nanyuki line, and urged the beneficiary counties to facilitate the provision of labour.
Already, talks are at an advanced between Kenya Railways and Kenya Pipeline Company to finance the initial Kshs3.5 billion project. Kenya Pipeline Company is exploring the railway line as an alternative to haul large amounts of fuel to a storage depot in Nanyuki as it seeks to step up fuel delivery to northern Kenya.
The project is expected to receive a major boost with World Bank and a Spanish consultancy company expressing interest in funding the rehabilitation of the railway lines.
The revival of the rail transport is set to avail immense commercial benefits in form of transport of beef, grain, horticultural products out of the county due to the efficient transportation, attraction of more investors to the county which is going to enhance the efficiency of production. Business communities and farmers will also be the major beneficiaries of the linked intercounties due to more business opportunities.
The project is expected to bolster Nanyuki's status as a regional transportation hub as it sits at the intersection of the Nairobi-Nanyuki and Nyahururu-Nanyuki-Isiolo line. The line is expected to link counties under CEREB to the LAPSSET Corridor.
