Laikipia County has stepped up efforts at realizing self-employment to the youth with the launch of new facilities to the Nanyuki Vocational Training Centre.
The new facilities are part of nine other similar projects across the country funded through grants to TVETs, with the Nanyuki center serving as the model for the other nine projects countrywide. On completion of the project, the institution will host 1000 students beginning January 2020 who shall be equipped with skills to turn them from job seekers into job creators.
The new facilities include a motor vehicle workshop complete with inspection pit, metal processing workshop, electrical welding workshop, and a modern kitchen and dining hall.
The project is part of a pledge by the county government to upgrade two technical training institutes to the national level, and is in line with countrys agenda to revive technical training. Already, the county government has announced to procure vehicle maintenance services from Nanyuki Vocational Training Centre once the motor vehicle workshop start operations.
As part of encouraging students enrolment, the institution is awarding tokens to students who manage to bring other students on board. The tokens include fee subsidy, cash reward and other incentives.
