Laikipia has greatly improved its performance. According to the just released Infotrak County ranking, Laikipia has improved especially in the Health and Agriculture sectors.
In matters health, the county was ranked at number 41 in 2015, and in 2020 it has been ranked at position 25. This performance is well proved by the various health developments the county government is involved in. For instance, the NHIF cover in Laikipia has reached 60% of the population. This is a major breakthrough as most of the population can now access affordable treatment. In this regard the County Government seeks to even reach out to 90% of NHIF coverage in the county.
Consequently, the County Government has had numerous partnerships such as UNICEF, World Bank, Danida, Amref, Safaricom, among others who have supported in better service delivery. These partnerships aid in the support of the undertakings in the health department like providing support in buying of medical equipment and support for hospitals and dispensaries to provide quality healthcare to the people of Laikipia.
There is also a major breakthrough in the upgrading of health facilities in the county. For example, the Safaricom Foundation donated laboratory equipment for Wiyumiririe dispensary on 2nd October this year. The County Government also recruited more staff to the facility. The people of Wiyumiririe and Upper Ngobit now have an upgraded facility within their reach.
On Wednesday last week 27th October 2020, the county government opened its first Empower cancer clinic which will provide cancer treatment services not previously offered. People around Nanyuki will not have to travel for long distances anymore to seek for cancer-related services. In the near future the County Government is still working towards more health developments.
Agriculture is very important to the people of Laikipia. Majority of residents keep livestock and grow different food crops. According to the released Infotrak County ranking, in 2015 it was ranked second last position, but has now moved 11 points up in this years ranking. This improvement shows that the county government has been fully involved in developing the agricultural sector.
The County Government through the Amaya Triangle Initiative has been encouraging feedlot farming where pastoralists are encouraged to rear animals in a simple zero grazing unit with the goal of rapidly fattening them. Feedlot farming reduces conflict especially in the north region where rustling and conflict of resources will greatly reduce. The department of Agriculture is also assisting farmers access veterinary services in order to have improved breeds of cattle to increase export opportunities.
Overall county performance in 2015 Laikipia was at number 38 while in 2020 it is at number 31, moving seven points.
There is therefore an overall improvement in the county. It is our belief that even a good thing can be made better.
