Laikipia County Overview
Laikipia County, located along the Equator in Kenya, is a vast and ecologically rich region covering 9,462 km², making it the 15th largest county in the country. Its name, derived from the Maasai word for "treeless plain," reflects the county’s iconic savannah landscapes and open rangelands. Renowned for its biodiversity, Laikipia is home to world-class wildlife conservancies and a thriving population of the Big Five, making it a prime destination for eco-tourism and conservation efforts. The county’s rural economy is supported by crop farming, livestock rearing, tourism, and trade, which provide livelihoods to thousands of households.

Culture, Governance, and Strategic Role
Laikipia is a melting pot of over 23 ethnic communities, including Maasai, Samburu, Kikuyu, Turkana, and Meru, fostering a vibrant cultural heritage and social cohesion. It plays a key role in regional development through strategic partnerships such as the Mt. Kenya and Aberdares Economic Bloc and the Amaya Triangle Initiative. Administratively, the county is divided into five sub-counties, three constituencies, and fifteen wards, ensuring governance and service delivery remain close to the people.
