Marking The International Day Of Forests At Lariak Forest

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Ms. Soipan Tuya together with Laikipia Governor H.E. Joshua Irungu EGH today led the citizens from the county and other guests in marking the International Day of Forests at Lariak Forest in Laikipia West.
The theme of this years event is Forests and Innovations for a Better World.
We have trained and deployed over 3,000 forest rangers to strengthen forest protection and surveillance. I am happy to report today that we have seen the illegalities that were happening in our forests reduce since we deployed these rangers, the CS said.
The County Government of Laikipia is leader efforts to ensure increased tree cover in the county as the President has directed.
Strategies in place to achieve this include distribution of quality seeds to farmers and community such as schools across the county.
Laikipia is on the forefront leading the national quest to plant 15 billion trees to achieve 30 per cent tree cover by 2032. Thirty per cent (30%) of these will be fruit trees to enhance both nutritional and economic wellbeing of our people, Governor Irungu noted.
My administration has also donated 20 acres of land to Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI) and which the national government has designated a site for quality trees and fruit trees seedlings propagation and distribution nurseries in addition to the Lariak Forest site, the county boss added.
Laikipia has also set up two million tree seedlings nurseries thus availing more trees for planting and adding to the area covered by forest in the county.
Trees are vital for humans and animals as they provide oxygen, food, shelter, fuel, and means of livelihood for the people living in and around the forest area.
They also help in mitigating climate change and purifying the air.
The County Woman MP Hon. Jane Kagiri, Gitonga Mugambi Principal Secretary st6ate Department for Forestry, County Secretary Mr. Koinange Wahome, CECM Trade and Industry Mr. Stephen Kisorio, Chief Officer Water, Environment and Natural Resources Mr. Abraham Lemanyishoe, among other senior Government officials were also present.
