NHIF: Laikipia Leading In Enrollment

Laikipia is on the top of counties with the highest number of people registered on the National Health Insurance Fund scheme.
NHIF manager for operations Mr Gibson Mwangi said model used by the County Government of Laikipia to register people to the health insurance scheme has seen 52 percent of the countys population enrolled in the health insurance scheme.
He was optimistic that the county will soon realize Universal Health Coverage.
Laikipia is among the top ten counties have attained 50 percent enrolment to NHIF but its model of registering people to NHIF is one that we would like to see rolled out in other counties," Mr Mwangi said after meeting with HE Governor Ndiritu Muriithi and Amref Health Africa CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi to assess progress of UHC in the county.
The county has been using community health volunteers who move from household to household enrolling families to NHIF and at the same time collecting their socio-economic data. They use a mobile phone application known as M-Jali developed through a partnership between the county government and Amref and which allows families to pay their premiums in small amounts. Its use has seen 272,924 Laikipia citizens enrolled on NHIF scheme.
Latest data collected shows that the volunteers have visited 90% of the countys households.
The data collected will make it easy for the county government to target specific households for a graduated subsidy scheme.
550 more community health volunteers and 55 community heath assistants would be recruited to enroll the 252,000 people remaining uncovered with each set to cover 200 households.
More facilities will be accredited to NHIF per ward to improve quality of health care.
