The process to streamline land sector in Laikipia has begun in earnest with the government kicking off a process aimed at 40,000 parcels issued with title deeds in the next three months.
Among the low hanging fruits in the initiative are creation more space at the local land registry and digitalizing its operations and gazetting of a modern registry in Rumuruti to bring service closer to the people.
Leaders led by Lands CS Faridah Karoney, PS Nicholas Muraguri Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, Deputy Governor John Mwaniki, Senator John Kinyua and MPS Mohamed Deddy and Catherine Waruguru and MCAs led by the leader of majority Hon Peter Thomi met with directors of all land-buying companies in the county on Wednesday mainly to isolate issues hindering land titling in the county.
It was the second time in two weeks that the CS was in Laikipia seeking to streamline the land sector.
Difficulties in acquiring land titles deeds due to double allocations, slow land procedures and the high cost of survey and land rates are among the major hurdles hindering land titling in Laikipia.
Speaking during the meeting held at the Nanyuki Social Hall the CS said the move will help fast track land titling in the county ahead of the presidents visit in March next year.
Land titling is a serious concern here in Laikipia; which is why both county and national government will work closely with these land buying companies to streamline operations, fast track land titling and digitize the land registry. We will open a new lands registry office in Rumuruti in order to bring our services closer to the people Ms Karoney said.
The ministry will assist counties in urban planning and repossession of public land. She added that her ministry will offer free survey and planning services to ensure proper development of regional urban centers as well as consider waiving stamp duty and title deed processing fees.
The CS promised to set up a team consisting of all land stakeholders across all sub counties within Laikipia to deal with auditing of green cards, double allocation among other land issues.
We will look into the issue of county land rates and organize a visit in January to all sub counties in order to fully address land issues within the county, said Governor Muriithi.
The CS also declared that title deeds belonging to over 700 public utility land which had been grabbed will be revoked.
