Rumuruti Municipality is the formal headquarters of Laikipia County. The municipality is centrally located and thus easily accessible from all parts of Laikipia County.

  

Rumuruti's population has grown from 32,993 in 2009 to a projected population of 42,585+ in 2022. Most of the population is below the age of 35. The rate of population growth is expected to rise owing to the status as County Headquarters, the construction of the Nyahururu — Maralal highway, and the growing integration of Northern Kenya to the rest of the country, in which Rumuruti acts as a gateway.

Rumuruti Municipality's Leadership

Rumuruti municipality is headed by the Municipal board which is composed of 12 members selected in accordance with UACA 2011.

  

Membership includes the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) and the Chief Officer (CO) for Urban Development. Four members of the board are recruited competitively by the county, while each of the other five members represent the following groups:

  

  • Professional associations
  • The private sector
  • The informal sector and
  • neighbourhood associations

  

The board membership includes the most critical professions and interests in urban development.

  

Socio-Economic Setting

  

The Municipality is home to cultural diversity with the majority of the inhabitants ranging from the Samburu, Kikuyu, Kalenjin, and other communities.

  

Rumuruti has a mixed economy based mainly on trade, agriculture, transport, and services with livestock as the municipality's economic mainstay.
